I never knew that 6th October each year is National Badger Day. Yesterday something cropped up on my social media feed and I was inspired to write my first blog for our new and upcoming site.
In early 2021 a campsite in the grounds of Roundwood Indoor Bowls and Function Centre was first conceived. A large, relatively flat piece of land, once used as a small pitch and putt course, had become overgrown and unwelcoming. Could this be turned into something special? The space had enough room for 10 camping pitches and a large barn that could provide welcome shelter for campers in the English summer. A further area towards the back of the site had the potential for a few more pitches. Would people want to stay here?
As a keen camper, I started to weigh up the prospect.
- A small site with a communal feel
- Plenty of space
- A covered space for inclement weather
- Situated overlooking the Wensum Valley
- A bar and restaurant already onsite as part of the indoor bowls complex
- On the edge of a village with plenty of amenities nearby and bus access into Norwich
- Good access links to the new Northern Distributor Road
- 30 minutes away from the North Norfolk Coast
- Plenty of tourist attractions nearby
It seemed to tick every box and as a result Roundwood Dell campsite was born.
So, what’s the link between National Badger Day and this blog? Well – one of our first hurdles to overcome was how to access the camping area. Our resident mammals had built a vast sett underneath the access track originally used for the pitch and putt and rendered it useless for large vehicles. So our first challenge was to redesign and clear a new route down to the area.
